The Samauma tree

Digital Art

The samaúma tree is one of the largest and tallest in the forest. Its crown blooms in the sky and its roots encompass everything around it. The local population calls it the “grandmother's tree” and ethnographic researchers found that indigenous peoples used to bury their dead in urns between these roots. They also used the tree to communicate with others in the forest: when you reach the roots, the noise reverberates through the trunk like a drum.
